SAXOPHONE GUIDE AND RESOURCE

Picture of the P.Mauriat PMX 66r tenor saxophone. When buying a saxophone, you can be misguided if you think it's going to be a straight forward task! With the abundance of reviews and opinions that litter the web, you can easily become a little unsure as to which direction to go. Basically, whether you're buying a sax for the first time or upgrading, it's going to be a very personal decision on what model, brand and set up you're going to go for.

So, with that in mind, I thought it was about time someone wrote a basic guide, based upon my own experiences over the last 20 years as a player and owner of various saxophones. I'll try to help you in your decision making, along with providing you with useful tips and resources for the saxophone. I won't be making any decisions for you, just nudging you in the right direction and hopefully making you a little more confident when it comes to the crunch! We all have our own ideas on how we learn, at what speed, what sound we want, what instrument to play (baritone, alto, tenor, soprano, etc), what style of music...and the list goes on! Also factors on what mouthpiece to use, with what reeds and do I need a different ligature?...so, you can see how it can get confusing!

I'm basing all my views and opinions purely on what I've learned and experienced in my time as a sax player, so please bare this in mind...these articles are to guide you...remember, what works for 1 person may not work for another, but we're taking my personal experiences and the broad approach here! There will be a series of articles concentrating on specific aspects of the saxophone, whether it's equipment or general tips and tricks...so don't forget to come back now and again to check this section out!
