Picture of Marilyn Monroe in the 7 year itch On August 5, 1962, LAPD police sergeant Jack Clemmons received a call at approximately 4:25 a.m. from Dr. Ralph Greenson, Marilyn Monroe's psychiatrist, proclaiming that Monroe was found dead at her home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California. She was 36 years old.

At the subsequent autopsy, eight milligrams of Chloral Hydrate and 4.5 milligrams of Nembutal were found in her system, and Dr. Thomas Noguchi of the Los Angeles County Coroners office recorded cause of death as "acute barbiturate poisoning," resulting from a "probable suicide".

Many theories, including murder, circulated about the circumstances of her death and the timeline after the body was found. Some conspiracy theories involved John and Robert Kennedy, while other theories suggested CIA or Mafia complicity.

Although Monroe had significant reported mood swings and had tried 4 times previously, this is the official cause of death. However conspiracy lovers and various forensic experts say that Monroe's suicide isn't consistent with forensic facts. She died, apparently, of a rectally administered barbiturate enema which, if true, could not have been administered by herself. Recently published transcripts from conversations with her psychiatrist, John Miner, indicate that Monroe was in good spirits, not suicidal, and was making plans for future events and movies, including a remarriage to Joe DiMaggio. "I feel certain I'll win an Oscar for one or more of my Shakespeare women," Monroe says according to the transcript.

2. SHE DIED AS A RESULT OF A SIMPLE ACCIDENT. If Marilyn died from a rectally-administered barbiturate enema, the question is who prepared and administered it. Conspiracy lovers have a field day on this theory. This is why: Marilyn had two physicians (Dr. Ralph Greenson and Dr. Hyman Engelberg) both were attempting to get her off Nembutal, substituting chloral hydrate to help her sleep.

It is possible, the story goes, that the fatal enema was given to Marilyn by mistake as Dr Greenson (now dead himself, so cant respond) was not aware that Monroe had been taking Nembutal capsules during the day. instead chloral hydrate to help her sleep. Milton Rudin claimed that Greenson said something very important the night of Marilyn's death: " God damn it! I gave her a prescription I didn't know about!". Also, Dr. Engelberg was apparently having marital problems at the time which might explain why he didn't communicate his prescription details. Monroe, too, may not have realized that Nembutal would have a reaction against the chloral hydrate. So, who administered the enema?

It had to be Eunice Murray, who, like Greenson, had no inkling that the sedative enema would be fatal. Any doctor might be loath to admit to himself or others that he had made such a significant mistake in such a high-profile patient, especially since Marilyn appeared drugged during the afternoon. Also, if Eunice was the person who administered the enema, it would be natural for her to try to protect herself and Dr. Greenson by pretending that no such procedure was given to Marilyn.

3. SHE WAS HAVING AN AFFAIR. Marilyn Monroe was having an affair with John F Kennedy (and possibly Robert) and she was about to go public with what she knew. There are a number of credible people who claim that Marilyn Monroe had affairs with one or both Kennedy brothers. John Kennedy, at least, was known to indulge himself in extramarital adventures. So, it is not at all implausible that President Kennedy availed himself of the charms of one of the sexiest and most attractive women of that era. Regarding Robert Kennedy, it is not nearly as clear why he would be inclined.

According to Peter Lawford, Marilyn's unrealistic notions about becoming First Lady caused her to embarrass herself with both Kennedy brothers. Her letters and telephone calls to them had become both tiresome and very risky. It was one thing to cavort with anonymous girls, but quite another to be involved with a celebrity sex symbol like Marilyn Monroe. There was every good reason for JFK and RFK to break off the relationship with Marilyn permanently.

What allegedly became so troublesome was Marilyn's supposed rage at JFK's rejection of her and the fear that she was able to strike in both brothers. Donald Wolfe sums it up: "Marilyn Monroe was in a position to bring down the presidency. She was cognizant of Jack Kennedy's marital infidelities and other private matters. She had his notes and letters and was privy to Kennedy's involvement with Sam Giancana. That the Kennedy brothers had discussed national security matters with the film star added to an astonishing array of indiscretions."

4. Robert Kennedy'S UNANNOUNCED VISIT. It is not out of the realm of possibility that Robert Kennedy was the man appointed by his brother to deliver the rejection to Marilyn personally. It's not the kind of thing that one writes in a letter and it's unlikely that JFK was anxious to deliver the message himself.

The president's brother, went to see Monroe the night she died to tell her that the President wanted to break off their relationship. There are witnesses, including a cop, who place Robert Kennedy in the area at the time of her death. This information may never be known for sure, but if Robert Kennedy did somehow make an unannounced visit to Marilyn Monroe on the night of August 4 with the intention of delivering the Presidents news, then it provides unexpected motivation for the suicide theory.

It is possible after this rejection her good mood, seen earlier in the day, changed and she killed herself. It is also alleged that somebody removed a diary and an incriminating note from Monroe's home at 12305 Fifth Helena Drive, Brentwood.

5. GOVERNMENT COVER UP. Was there an attempt on the part of the government to cover up John Kennedy's indiscretions with Marilyn Monroe? It would be extremely surprising if there were not such an attempt. The alleged cover-up was believed to have extended beyond the phone records and police evidence found at the scene.

Shortly after his phone call to the Naars before 11 p.m. on the night of Marilyn's death, it is believed that Peter Lawford and Pat Newcomb went to Marilyn's house. Purportedly in a state of panic, Lawford called brother-in-law Bobby Kennedy and explained what had occurred.

They knew Marilyn knew a lot about JFK: his marital infidelities (at the time hushed up) and other private matters. She had his notes and letters and was privy to Kennedy's involvement with Sam Giancana, the mob leader. The Kennedy brothers had discussed national security matters with Monroe. So, were Lawford and Newcomb on a mission? or was it purely co-incidental that they were there.

6. ROBERT KENNEDY'S INVOLVEMENT. Was Robert Kennedy involved in Marilyn Monroes murder? Many would say, to suggest this, as some have, would show questionable ignorance on their part. Mystery surrounds the death of Marilyn Monroe, but it does not surround the character and integrity of Robert Kennedy (the Attorney General). So, this theory would seem to be a non-starter from all but extreme viewpoints. However, it is not totally dismissed.

7. THE MAFIA WERE RESPONSIBLE. Well the motive was there, as they could have been eager to avenge themselves on the Kennedys, for Robert's strike against them. Did they want to expose the Kennedys' philandering to the American public? Knowing the individuals present at Marilyn's home on the night of August 4th 1962, this makes it extremely unlikely that there was any mafia involvement.

Picture of Marilyn Monroes crypt On August 8, 1962, Monroe was interred in a crypt at Corridor of Memories #24, at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Westwood, Los Angeles. On that day, thousands lined the streets and grieved for their icon and the world's movie legend, Marilyn Monroe.
