TUTORIAL FOR MODIFYING EVENT SOUNDS IN WINDOWS XP

Using a PC can be hard work at times, but for most of us, it's a great resource and fantastic fun. you can personalise everything from the desk top, right down to the computers event sounds and sound schemes. What is an event sound and a sound scheme you say...well, a computer is designed to make various audible sounds, such as, the start up and shut down music, command prompts, emptying the recycle bin, navigation clicks and a whole lot more.

Being able to customise the computer in this way can make things a little more interesting and a lot more fun. We can personalise sounds, make our own original events, or simply record audio from, let’s say a film or a piece of music. All in all, it just adds that little something different to the experience of using the PC. OK, so if you would like to set up some of the events sounds available here, then follow the instructions below (this is using Windows XP home, although other Windows operating systems should be very similar).

1. Go to your start menu by pressing the windows key.
2. Press S for settings, then C for control panel and then S until you get to “Sounds and audio devices” Alternatively you can use your cursor keys to navigate to this point.
3. Hit enter and control tab once to the “Sounds” page.
4. Tab 3 times,. or until you get to a tree view. Now use your up and down cursor keys to go to the following:-
A. For a “e mail announcement event sound”, go down to “new mail notification”.
B. For the “start up event sound”, go down to the “start windows”.
C. For the “shut down event sound”, go down to “exit windows”.
D. For the “recycle bin event sound”, go down to “Empty recycle bin”. This is located as you go down the tree view, under “Window Explorer”.
5. If you now tab once you will see the existing sound that is being used. Tab once more to the "play and stop toggle button" and by pressing the space bar, you will hear that sound being played. One more time (3 times from the tree view) and you will be on a browse button.
6. Hit enter and browse to the sound on your PC that you would like to be played for that event. When you’ve selected the sound to be played, tab over to “OK” and you’ll be back on the browse button. Tab once more and enter on the “OK” button. Then that sound should be played whenever that event happens.

Have fun and when you get a little more confident with doing this, you can try some of the other events listed in the tree view, such as “select, program error or print complete”. Good luck and happy eventing!
